Food and cooking

MY FAVOURITE FOOD

It's really hard to decide what food is my favourite because there is a lot of food I really like and love but if I had to choose it'll be probably a grilled meat (fish, chicken, beef, pork..) with mashed potatoes or food I'm making a lot and it has no name - it's a fried rice with meat and vegetable in an egg omelette. It is super simple to make, very delicious and quite healthy.

MY FAVOURITE CZECH FOOD (+ recipe)

My favourite Czech food is a cutlet with potato salad. It is simple and for me extra delicious.
You'll need:
  • cutlet (whatever kind of meat you prefer)
  • potatoes
  • cucumbers (sour ones) - sliced
  • carrot - sliced
  • mayonnaise
  • salt
  • pepper
  • breadcrumbs
  • oil
For salad : Firstly you need to boil your potatoes but IN peel - then you will peel them and mash them into a mixing bowl. Than you add mayonnaise, cucumbers, carrots, salt and pepper (it all depends on taste).

For cutlet: Firstly you need to tenderize your cutlet. Than you salt it and wrap it in breadcrumbs. Final step is to fry it on your pan with oil.

MY FAVOURITE DRINK:

I don't have the most favourite drink, but I really like juices (especially apple and orange), teas, kofola and cocoa.

TYPICAL CZECH CUISINE AND TABLE MANNERS:

Our czech cuisine contains mainly fat food (roastbeef, roasted goose, sauces, dumplings..) and people drink with this food mainly beer. I'm not sure about table manners (if there are some) but in our country it is common to eat with family or friends. People usually start with a soup (sometimes with starter), continue with main food and sometimes finish with desert.

I WOULD NEVER EAT AND DRINK:

I would never eat tomatoes and cumin - when I eat it I feel really sick. And I don't drink alcohol because I don't find it tasty.

MY SPECIALTY (+ recipe):

I don't know if it actually is my specialty but my family loves my pancakes. They are simple and I make them quite often because I love sweet things.

You'll need:
  • flour (2cups)
  • sugar (2spoons)
  • eggs (2x)
  • warm milk (1 and 1/2 cup)
  • salt

Mix all these ingredients into a mixing bowl until your dough is all smooth and than you star fry it on your frying pan with oil and flip it after about 7minutes (until your pancakes turn gold/brown). The last step is to let them chill and than you put a marmelade on or whipped cream, nutella - whatever you like.

If I had to choose with whom would go for dinner, it would definitely be my boyfriend, my best friend and my mother and the reason is simple - They mean the world to me and I appretiate every second with them.

Vocabulary:

dough - těsto
starter - předkrm
cumin - kmín
mayonnaise - majonéza
breadcrumbs - strouhanka
wrap - obalit
boil - vařit
tenderize - naklepat
sliced - nakrájené

St.Valentine's Day

St.Valentine's day is the second most celebrated holiday around the world (second after New Year's day) and it is celebrated on 14th February. When this holiday is on common weekday, it doesn't matter, shops, cinemas etc. are opened and people go to work as usual.

HISTORY :

According to wikipedia:
It began as a liturgical celebration of Christian named "Valentinus" who was imprisoned because he performed weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry or for Christians who were persectued under the Roman Empire.
During his imprisonment he healed a daughter of jailer named Asterius and as a farewell to her Valentinus wrote a letter in which was written: "From your Valentine".

TODAY:

As I wrote in the beginning: St. Valentine's day is celebrated on 14th February each year and it's known as the day of love. Pairs from all over the world spend this romantic day together, give gifts to each other (men give roses to women, heart - shaped cards, chocolates etc.) and have a nice time.
Mythology says that people fell in love with each other when a Cupid shooted them with his magical arrow.

Key words:
Cupid - the little angel who made two people fall in love with an arrow
Valentinus - christian, he performed weddings for the one who has it forbidden
Valentine card - a greeting card which is given on this day, it usually has red/pink color and can be shaped as a heart

You should know about..

SMOSH

I don't really know if you will be interested in these guys, but I think they are really funny.

As Wikipedie says "Smosh is comedy-based duo" and a week ago they hit 2Bilions views on their YouTube channel on which they started uploaded their videos since 2005, but they were actually recording their videos since 2003. Their names are Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox.
I really like the fact they started making their videos as a best friends, they became famous as a best friends and their friendship lasts till now.
What are their videos about? It's simple. The're making fun of celebrities, cartoons, they're making parodies, their own songs on themas like: Video games, movies etc. and I love how they can make fun even from themselves (their acting skills are perfect, perfectly overreacted). It sure has to be fun to be with them - my big dream is to meet them one day!
Some of the people marks them as a "geek duo", which means that they are interested in playing video games, wathing series like The Big Bang Theory etc. I love their videos, they are funny and ridiculous at the same time. I started watching and also "subscribing" (on YT channel) them in year 2007 and they're making me laugh so hard till now.

If you like these "geek things" and you have weird sense of humour, try to watch them and you will see.

My new year's resolutions

It was a long time since I made some new year's resolution and I don't usually make them for one simple reason: I'm never able to keep them but this year I want to make them come true.

And WHAT are my new year's resolutions?

1. The most important thing I want to at least reduce is to spend less time with video games which I love so much. A lot of people judges me for playing video games only because I'm a girl but I think they don't have to judge someone only because of way. I feel great and I can relax while playing - it is also a great opportunity to meet new people and practice english language through online games.

2. Stop swearing. I really, really want to stop swearing. I don't use these bad words all the time, but when something is broken or does not working properly I start to say them - or when I'm angry or someone really drives me crazy. It is my second try to have this as my new year's resolution and I really want to give it up..

3. Spend more time with sport. Even the fact that I'm doing sport everyday (aerobics, strengthening, fitness etc.) I want to exercise more, in every free time I have. Why? I feel better after some exercise and I want to become stronger and keep my body slim for as long as possible.

4. I want to spend more time cooking and baking, try more new recipes and improve my skills. It may sound a bit ridiculous but this is an activity I really like. I love baking, especially cakes, cookies, muffins and pies and to make them look nice - I also give these thing I made as a birthday presents :).

So that's all and I hope I will be able to fulfill these resolutions :).

Christmas

I've chosen describing Christmas traditions my family has for a long time instead of my "Wish list" because there really is nothing special to wish for. I think that I'm happy with things I have now and for people I know. So..

Christmas traditions in my family

Where should I start? What about day before Christmas Eve? Day before Christmas Eve (23.12) we are usually decorating our Christmas tree. We do not have 'live' tree, because my mum is an alergic person and really hates those  needles which are always falling down on the floor. After I finish this, I'm helping my mum with preparations on Christmas Eve -> we are setting table in dining room, making potato salad and other things. While doing this we are always listening carols and singing along.

24.12. - so the day of Christmas Eve, we are always watching movie "Home Alone". Me and my family really love this film, it's something like our ritual on Christmas day, I'm wondering if I will get fed up by that someday. Except watching this movie, we are watching another movies/fairytales in TV, listening to carols or another christmas songs, eating sweets and so on. On this day we don't have lunch (strange for some people but Christmas dinner is even better than, because "Hunger is the best cook").
When clocks hit 16.00 peace is fading away. Preparations starts and everyone is getting ready for Christmas dinner. Before dinner I give presents I bought for everyone to my mum and she is puts them together underneath the Christmas tree.
When we finish eating dinner, my mum cuts an apple while me saying a poem about the 'star' in the middle of the apple. Then we drink some tea with a lemon, eat some sweets and then we are going to our living room to Christmas tree to see "how much we were nice this year" -> to see presents we got, of course.

Sometimes my parents force me to play something on my keyboard or sing some song to them and even the truth that I feel embarrased, I'm always singing just because it makes them happy and Christmas time is really incredivle for me. I think I'm really sensitive person (I know that a lot of people does not think this), because I always burst into tears when I got some present (even if it was something stupid).
I love Christmas very much and I'm really glad that I have incredible people with whom I can spend these special days.

Home.. sweet? home

Describing the house I live in would probably not be something that difficult. I live in a terraced house which is near of Masaryk's square (so near the centre of Děčín). I always say that my house is opposite the school named "Stavební škola" (or something like this :D) so sometimes it can be big noise here.

In this grey/brown house is about 8 or 10 2+1 flats and two flats in each floor share a wall. A design of this house is simple -> only colored, without tiles or something like that but I think that simple things are nice. Everyone has to pay a fee for their flat.

I don't like my neighbours but I don't hate them, my parents taught me to greet every older person so I'm doing it everytime I see them. They are curious and I don't have much of a "privacy" only because of them (my parents know with whom I was outside, with whom I was speaking and so on) and younger couple who lives next to us is pretty noisy and they just not simply let me sleep in peace.

I've been living here since I was born so I have a lot of memories connected with this house so I like it beacause of this fact.
